Colin and his colleague, John, of Big Reuse came to Prospect Heights Community Farm with their truck and all their supplies and, with the assistance of garden members Kimbirly and Mickey, installed our two new metal compost bins!

Preparing the way: Isaac and Mickey moved wooden Bins 1 and 2 to make room for the new metal bins., and moved some of the concrete blocks that served as the base for these bins.

Colin (left) and John (right) of Big Reuse calculated the footprint for the gravel, pavers and bins which would lie on top of the soil.

Kimbirly with one of the partially constructed bins. The metal sides, back and base were clamped together with pop rivets. Colin had an electric drill with a special adapter to apply the rivets.

Colin and John took extra care to level and compact the gravel (and the soil beneath) with our hand tamper.

The completed bins with the three removable doors in front and the cover on top. Congratulations! Meet our beautiful twins! Altogether, the delivery – er, installation, took about 4 hours (According to Colin and John, neither the longest nor the quickest installation job they’ve had).
