The Garden Season Is Here

Thank you to garden members who pitched in and brought great energy to the first work day of the new season! Led by Master Gardener Traci, we distributed a fresh pile of woodchips and also did some pruning and trimming.

If you participated in the work day and haven’t already, please submit your Service Hours. Thank you again!

What is a work day?

Led by a master gardener, a workday typically follows a meeting and is a great way to get involved with the garden! MGs will prioritize tasks around the garden, which can include moving and distributing soil, pruning, trimming, removing nails from boards, picking up leaves for compost, spreading fresh compost and lots more.

Work days count toward a member’s Service Hours. Service Hours are required for all/most members. Work Hours + Open Hours = Service Hours. More details about Service Hours can be viewed here.

It’s that time of year again! Please join us at PHCF for the 24th Annual Pumpkin Smash Potato Bake Bash.

Saturday, November 5th from 12-4pm.
Rain date: Sun. November 6th, 12 – 4 pm.

Help us spread the word among family and friends. Together we have been smashing
pumpkins and baking potatoes since 1998. Don’t forget your jack o’lantern!

Free Puppet Show in the garden!

Join us at PHCF on Sunday, July 3rd at 3pm for a FREE Wonderspark Puppets puppet show – The Little Red Hen! The classic story of a Hen who needs YOUR help to make some bread! The Little Red Hen is an interactive play that gets kids moving their bodies, calling out and laughing!

Every animal on the farm wants to eat the Hen’s bread, but no one wants to help make it. We will learn the benefits of helping out and teamwork while exercising and singing along! Geared towards kids age 0-3 but all are welcome!

Puppet show will run approximately 35-40 minutes

WonderSpark Puppets is a New York City based puppet theater company led by Chad Williams and Z Briggs.  The company’s mission is to spread joy, spark imagination and share laughter through high quality puppet performances.  They have partnered with brands like Bed Bath & Beyond, CAMP, NYC Public Schools and the New York Public Library. They have toured internationally, bringing original productions and puppetry workshops to festivals in Thailand and Taiwan. Since mid-March 2020 they have been streaming live puppet shows for families in quarantine and streaming schools. Their mission is to spread joy, spark imagination and share laughter through high quality puppet performances. 

Free Little Pantry in the Garden

A group of 8th grade Berkeley Carroll students and their teachers delivered a Little Free Pantry to our garden on June 1st as part of a community action project.

The 15 x 15 x 26 pantry was built by the students and will be stocked with non-perishable items for the benefit of our neighbors.  The pantry follows the well-known model of the Little Free Libraries seen around the city. PHCF also has a Victory Garden fresh food giveaway every Sunday.  The Victory Garden and food pantry are our modest efforts to address food insecurity in our neighborhood.

Last Food Scrap Collection is December 12!

With your help, we have diverted 100,000 LB of food waste into nutrient rich compost since June 2020!

But the Pharm will no longer be accepting food scraps in two weeks. Come by tomorrow or next Sunday (10am-1pm), thereafter you will need to make new plans.

Grow NYC has resumed collection at:

  • Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket, Saturdays, 8 am – 2 pm
  • 7th Ave & Carlton B-Q station, Thursdays, 8-11 am 
  • Franklin Ave 2-3-4-5 Station, Thursdays, 8:30-11:30 am 

Plant Sale Saturday

One day added this weekend (5/22)! There will be plants for sale this Saturday noon-4pm. Last Chance if you missed us last weekend. There are plenty of herbs, flowers, ground cover and all types of plants left!
